What Are Product Attributes?

This article summarizes what product attributes are and what kinds of attributes SKU IQ can sync.

Overview

SKU IQ can be used for more than just keeping your inventory quantities up to date. We can facilitate making edits to your products between platforms as well. For instance, if you'd like to change the way a product title is written on both your Point of Sale and your eCommerce website, we can automate that change with product attribute syncing. There are a lot of different attributes (AKA product data types or fields) that can be synced between your Point of Sale and eCommerce website.

What is an Attribute?

Product attributes (AKA data type or fields) are properties that describes a product. They include details that are tangible (like size and color) and/or intangible (like the product price). These bits of information helps you and your shoppers find and choose which products are right for them.

What's the Difference Between an Attribute and Quantity?

The quantity is the physical number of items you have available for sale. The attributes describe the products you have available for sale. With SKU IQ, we will always sync your products' quantities as long as the products are linked together. Product attributes on the other hand are voluntarily selected by you to facilitate editing these data types in the future, should something like the size, price, or title need to be changed on both platforms simultaneously. If you are pushing a product, don't worry, the product attributes that can be synced between your platforms will be sent over without issue!

Do Attributes Sync Bidirectionally?

Yes! Many product attributes will sync bidirectionally between your Clover and your eCommerce platforms. Check out the article below in More Information for which ones we can sync bidirectionally automatically!

What are Some Examples of Product Attributes?

⭐ Item Name: This is the title of the product as you see it on your Clover Terminal

⭐ Description: This is the field on Shopify where you would enter in information about the product to show on your website. This would be information that isn't a size, color, material, etc. but ultimately can be any information you'd like to share with your customer - including to linking to other products they may find useful.

⭐ Price: This field is how much your customer would be paying for the item if they were to purchase it. There are some instances where a Sale Price would show instead, but that is controlled in a different area than on item creation or editing.

Item Cost/Cost Per Item/Unit Cost: This field is the price you paid for the item. It's generally used to calculate the profit you're making off of a particular item.

⭐ Size: This field is typically used for garments, but you can use it for all sorts of other products too. Many merchants will use quick and easy symbolism like S for small, M for Medium, etc. You can also list items, like a tumbler for instance, as 16 oz, 32 oz, 64oz, using the size field.

There are lots of other product attributes and fields that you can fill out on both Clover & Shopify. For a full explanation of each, take a look at the section below on
